Winter over – 2010’s first race

Despite a last hurrah 8 inch snow on March 20th — March 30th is here and it’s quite nice out, and looks to be for the foreseeable future!

So if you are still looking at the Winter graphic up top, hold the right shift button and hit refresh… there you go! Much better!

Well despite the nice weather — I guess the *real* last hurrah was the 40 degree and cold rain 10am start to the first 5k of the year. These March & April 5ks in Kansas are pretty much guaranteed to be cold!

Well if you’ve followed my blog at all you’ll know that Holden (my son) and I ran the Ft. Leavenworth “Spring Stroll” 5k on Saturday, March 27th, at 10am.

Here’s the video:

Many more races planned this year, and maybe some new fresh content… stay tuned…

New Race in Kansas City

Looks like Kansas City has a new Half-Marathon in town, I was just informed of the inaugural “Rock the Parkway” Kansas City Half-Marathon. It will take place March 27th, 2010 at 7:30am on Ward Parkway in-between W. 92nd and Madison. Like most Marathons and Half-Marathons it will also feature 10k and 5k distances.

I won’t be going because I’ll be at the local 5k. Hmmm… perhaps next year! I’ll read some reviews and see if it shows up on the roster again next year. 5ks are a dime a dozen, but any new larger race, particularly Half-Marathons and up – are notable in that they require considerable resources to pull off successfully.

Nice to see another race show up… but as the calendar goes, events will inevitably end up on the same date forcing a choice! This time we’ll go with the easier (I’m still trying to get back into shape), cheaper, family event. I’ll be interested to see how it goes though!

Upcoming Spring 2010 Races

The next race I plan to participate in, will be the “Spring Stroll 5k” on Ft. Leavenworth which will take place March 27, 2010 at 10:00am. This is being put on by Fort Leavenworth MWR and billed as a fun family fitness event – as such… I’ll be bringing my 7 year old son to run with me. He seems quite excited about it and has been doing a little bit of training with me. This will be his first 5k, and race period. We’re not shooting for any time at all… just a nice finish and a fun time.

The only slightly discouraging thing about this race is that there are no age groups and prizes… after all not many 7 year-olds enter — so it almost guarantees you at least a 3rd place finish — however — with the billing of this event and the start time – there may very well be a plethora of kids… so I’m sure it will work out. I’ve told him we’ll be getting a T-Shirt and he’s quite excited for that. The first 10 finishers receive a gift certificate. This, as far as I know is the first time for this event and I’m looking forward to the year to come – they’ve stated “stay tuned for monthly 5k runs” — hey if that’s the case great!!

Well overall I am very excited to have a member of my family running with me. He has also been “working out” with me 2-3 times a week… we’re doing some weights, push-ups, sit-ups, treadmill, and elliptical. (Don’t worry he’s not doing much weight lifting!) We also ran home from Grandma’s the other day instead of driving. We made the 1 mile in about 10 minutes — not bad!

The Five Trails Half-Marathon is looming ever closer on May 16th 2010 — 76 Days from now!! That’s the next major race I’m training for. Stay tuned…
